Story of the House:
Il Santuario has come a long way in the past six years from the original ruins of the chestnut drying store which had been derelict for many years; it had been left to deteriorate on a small area of terraced land. We, the owners, fell in love with the position of the ruin and the spectacular views. It took a number of years and a lot of love and patience to transform the chestnut shed into a house that now blends beautifully into the mountainside at the foot of the Apennines. For many years goats sheltered in the ruins and pigeons roosted in the rafters but now the original ruin is cleverly linked to the new part of the house by a double spaced tower. The house has been architecturally designed to encompass the majestic views from every aspect. To the rear of the house an ancient arch stands proudly over this special space. Originally ancient paths led through the arch to a monastery and pastures beyond.
The house provides an easy informal way of living so important for holidays. It is spacious with open plan living. Architecturally designed to link the simple contemporary beauty of the inside with the natural beauty of the outside. We have carefully chosen every piece to reflect the special ambience of Il Santuario and the bedrooms are decorated in a palette of pale hues to enhance the serenity of this tranquil place. We recommend you take advantage of the varied terraced areas around the house to appreciate the views and enjoy the sun down with a cocktail on the tower. We hope you will simply relax and enjoy the house and its surroundings.
If you are feeling more active we can encourage you to visit the many local places of outstanding beauty and historical interest in this area of Northern Tuscany and Liguria; Portovenere, Lerici, Lucca, La Spezia and Pontremoli are just a few of these places. We are close to a World Heritage Coastal Site surrounding the Bay of Poets with the renowned and unmissable protected Cinque Terre.
